I remember having read in 1997 in Germany's most important conservative newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" a story about AIDS in Spain. The author was discussing the issue of growing infections numbers among heterosexual women, and commented without any emotion that "now, as AIDS has spread from Homosexuals and drug addicts to the majority population, the government of Spain has determined to combate the widespread of this disease". The reverse thought is as clear as cristall: As long as the deadly disease concerns only gays and junkies, there is no reason to do anything about it.
One thing where Larry is probably wrong, is his general condemnation of pharmaceutic industry. He makes this particular industry responsible for what should be the job of the governments - appropriate funding of drug research. Developement of one single medication takes 7-10 years and can easily cost billions of dollars nowadays, and if the public wants these medications be made available for everybody at production costs, the UN or whoever shall buy the patents and give them free.
