Title: Gay Music
Post by: Feral on Thu, May 25, 2006, 06:16
Periodically I root around on the web for gay musicians to listen to. As a rule, I pay little attention to bands that do not offer at least one MP3 file for downloading. If I can't play it at work it does me little good. Here's a bit of what I've been listening to lately.

QBoy (http://www.qboy.co.uk/)  I do not ordinarily like hip-hop, but QBoy has been growing on me. His album "Even the Women Like Him" has sold out, but it's tracks are available for free download on his site. The remixed version of <a href="http://www.qboy.co.uk/music/oh%20yeah/QBoy%20-%20Oh%20Yeah!%20[Remix].mp3">"Oh Yeah"[/url] is among my favorites.

Screeching Felines (http://www.screechingfelines.com/)  The Screeching Felines call themselves "post-modern proto-punk." The band is reworking its site, but in the interim, they offer "Happy F*cking V-Day," a 5-track digital EP, down to the artwork for the CD case. The files are rather large so if your time is limited, I would recommend the first track. The Screeching Felines also have a MySpace page (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=41736859).

Peto-a-go-go (http://www.petoagogo.com/music.html)   Peto offers a great many of his recording on his web site where he will also gladly sell you a CD. His remix of "Frosted (http://www.petoagogo.com/audio_files/Frosted_(remix).mp3)" by Spoilsport is my favorite.

Spoilsport (http://www.spoilsport.net/)  Their original version (http://home.comcast.net/~j.hetman/music/Frosted.mp3) of "Frosted" reigned as my favorite song for many weeks. They are a Punk/Pop/Surf band. Several tracks from their album "They All Want Cake" can be heard on their web site.

Girlyman (http://www.daemonrecords.com/girlyman/index.htm)  This band's style has often been called "Urban Folk." It is harmony driven music that even my mother would enjoy. Songs from both of their albums can be downloaded at their page on the Daemon Records web site. Not to be missed: "The Shape I Found You In (http://www.daemonrecords.com/girlyman/The%20Shape.mp3)."

(Edited to remove a band that contains no self-identified gay members -- even though they're good.)

From 247gay.com (http://www.247gay.com/article.cfm?id=9620&section=66):

Quote
Singer Matt Alber will open the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago performing "Beotia," an original song that celebrates the love of ancient Greece’s Sacred Band of Thebes. The song is from Nonchalant, the forthcoming debut album by Alber, an out gay singer and former member of the multi-Grammy winning choral ensemble, Chanticleer.

You can hear "Beotia" at Matt Alber's MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/mattalber). He also has his own site (http://www.mattalber.com/).

Fair warning: no one will be dancing to "Beotia," nor do I expect a thumping house remix of it anytime soon -- DJs can work wonders, but not miracles.

(Edited to remove a band because sample clips are not the same as free downloads. I require at least two complete songs before I'll plug a band.)

Our little darling Q-Boy participates in the project Gay HipHop (http://gayhiphop.com/) which contains links to a couple of groups and some interesting articles.

Has anyone else here heard the Finnish (classical) composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara's setting of James Broughton's ironic gay poems: True and False Unicorn (http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/6028671/a/Rautavaara:+True+&+False+Unicorn,+etc+%2F+Nuoranne,+et+al.htm)? I can strongly recommend it.
