Quote
It is sexuality that makes us homosexuals; it is the affirmation of ourselves as homosexuals that makes us gay. Sexuality is not the same as love. Homosexuality is not the same as “men loving men,” though it sounds good as a slogan to make us respectable in the eyes of the straight world. Even at our most chauvinistic it is absurd to imply that the straight world is unfamiliar with or unfriendly to the concept of men loving men. They have developed a multiplicity of forms for male bonding, some of which they even regard as noble, some of which even we can regard as noble. What drives them nuts is not love between men but sex between men.

This is probably a bit controversal statement. I will try to explain my views on this issue.

At the first glance, it is obvious that straight men often pretend to think gay sex being disgusting to them and that they would find other males physically not attractive for them. The idea of themselves being penetrated or forced to make a fellatio to another man or even kiss him fills straight men with horror and a shiver runs down their backs. At the same time they prefer male company at all other occasions than sex, and of course they love their parents, children and friends.

On the other hand, a lot of straight men wouldn't object the chance to fuck another man or be sucked, as long as they are "active" and the partner is rather young and inferior to them. Even the most evile machos in prisons or army take advantage of their power position and widely use the young and helpless inmates to pander their own sexual needs. All this is happening by knowledge and upproval of the other inmates, taking no offence at such physical love and even regarding it a fair use of somebody else's buttom. These people would indignantly deny that they love the object of their abuse, and would declare that it's all just about sex. They would even beat up and torture some truly gay men if they will get knowledge of them, "'cause these faggots are really disgusting." It suggests that straight men have little problems to have sex with men if this happens purely to relief their immediate physiological needs and when they are "using" somebody elso for their wants. It's a question of power. Pretty often straight men also have sex with male transvestite prostitutes well-knowing whom they are just using as a sexual object; they have however no scrupples to beat up the prostitute after he has accomplished his job, reason for beating up being told that the boy were a "swish", "Tunte", "pedal" or "mariposo".

It is clear therefore, that in truth all those homophobes object our identity as queer men. In certain countries of the Orient it is still often regarded not as especially unmanly when a young lad does a favour to an older man, non of them (of course!) being a "homo". However, relationship of two adult men is not tolerated, them being clearly "no real men". The affectionate bodily relationship of two men, unability to have sex with women and their apparent desinterest to any typical heterosexual conversation (such as size of breast of the girl on the magazine and the like) - all this makes a straight man feel that we are different. Being an alien to a straight man, we stirr up his inborn xenophobia. This is, by the way, the point were assimilationists are trying to get the straight man to give up his homophobia - by attempting to persuade him of us being "the same" as he. This is also the reason why straights mostly accept bisexuals as their likes - at least they share one common interest. I have met once a bisexual who was seriously arguing that "all those faggots" falsely were using such prominent examples as Plato, Socrates and Alexander the Greate to defend their agenda, whereby "everybody knows that the old Greeks were no pederasts but bisexuals"!!! I was speechless. Though the man obviously didn't know the true meaning of the word (παιδί + εραστής), or was unfamiliar with the very nature of "Greek love", he was right in one point - the old greeks were not really friends of homosexual love as we know it. Despite of all their appreciation for the boy love, they used to be married and produce children, being in this way the first true "integrationalist" community, with some kind of bisexuality being a consense.

Denneny 3: The central issue of gay politics is sexuality

Denneny’s third proposition is: “The central issue of gay politics is sexuality.”
