An interesting article on Larry Kramer and his brother has appeared in "The Seattle Times".

Quote
In his wrenching autobiographical play about AIDS in New York in the 1980s, Larry Kramer made his brother the face of evil in an uncaring world.

The conflict between the brothers in that play, "The Normal Heart," was the consummate coming-out story. The straight brother couldn't find it in his heart to renounce his gay sibling yet couldn't accept him as normal, either.

More than 20 years after the play opened, Larry and Arthur Kramer are talking again. Their lives have trumped art. Their relationship has gone through a series of changes, and in the past 10 years, the brothers have become collaborators on gay-rights issues.

I remember having read in 1997 in Germany's most important conservative newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" a story about AIDS in Spain. The author was discussing the issue of growing infections numbers among heterosexual women, and commented without any emotion that "now, as AIDS has spread from Homosexuals and drug addicts to the majority population, the government of Spain has determined to combate the widespread of this disease". The reverse thought is as clear as cristall: As long as the deadly disease concerns only gays and junkies, there is no reason to do anything about it.

One thing where Larry is probably wrong, is his general condemnation of pharmaceutic industry. He makes this particular industry responsible for what should be the job of the governments - appropriate funding of drug research. Developement of one single medication takes 7-10 years and can easily cost billions of dollars nowadays, and if the public wants these medications be made available for everybody at production costs, the UN or whoever shall buy the patents and give them free.

Larry Kramer presented some remarks for the New York Times “Times Talks” AIDS at 25: What Next? Panel yesterday. You can read "NUREMBERG TRIALS FOR AIDS" at Michael Petrelis' blog.
